This paper is an attempt to understand how the novel relates to the story of a white couple but narrates the social life of both the communities, the white settlers and the black African native with the deep-rooted prejudices and bias against each other. The novel is indeed a brilliant exploration of the oppressed and the oppressor evoking an incredible sense of place. The novel presents the vivid account of the social life of the people living there and deals with the racial politics between the whites and the blacks in that country.
